Stencil The City

Stencil The City

This morning I participated in one of the “Here When You Need Us” community service days that the company I work for facilitates. We volunteered for Local Motion, a member-supported non-profit IMG_7276organization promoting people-powered transportation and recreation for healthy and sustainable Vermont communities. The project we helped with is called “Stencil the City”. The idea behind it is to promote safer streets & sidewalks by stenciling catchy messages with spray-chalk on the street/sidewalk intersections for pedestrians and bikers to read. For example, imagine walking down the sidewalk while texting a friend when, right below your feet, you see something unexpected “Stop Texting and Look Up”! Or, as you fly down the hill on your bike and are about to cross an intersection, there’s another one “Bikes Stop Too”!

There are a bunch of other messages that were able to be put down on the sidewalks also. The saying that my group worked with was “Be Bright At Night”IMG_7277 and was accompanied by a picture of a bicyclist with lights as well as a pedestrian with a reflective armband on. Some of the chalk sprays came out quicker than others so we had to master the art but it was fun being able to legally tag the streets! IMG_7275The highlight of the day, however, was when we passed a newly opened doughnut shop… of course we had to make a pit stop! I got a vegan maple doughnut (proud of myself) and it was absolutely delicious! I also couldn’t resist stopping to get myself some freshly pressed juice. It was right on the route we were spraying so I had to get one.

With 4th of July rapidly approaching, we thought it was important to get these messages on the sidewalks as the downtown area will be crazy busy this weekend. It was perfect timing to help protect the crowds and prevent possible accidents… plus I was out of the office for a majority of the day which means it’s almost time to hit the road again! Let the wild rumpus, begin!

I hope you all have an awesome & safe 4th of July weekend!
